What Will Girls Learn?
Now in her senior year at Raines High School, Amber Ferrell is about to end one phase of her life and begin another. Girls Inc. The nonprofit, which provides at-risk girls with after-school, literacy, summer and outreach programs , and the health insurer are partnering on an after-school "Healthy Living" course for girls. The course currently targets ninth- through 12th-graders in Girls Inc. The course is designed to increase girls' understanding of the wide range of factors that can affect their health and help them develop the skills to take charge of their health. Life, she said, can be "relentless" and for her will soon become more so. After her busy high school career — she was Miss Raines High School and a cheerleader, among other things — she heads to the University of South Florida to major in bio-medical science. The course, Amber said, has "allowed me to open my eyes" about herself and the world around her. I am just starting out and I wanted to learn," she said.
